That's just, like, your opinion, man.

Channel 9's Meal Madness took sixty-four Cincinnati-area restaurants and pitted them against each other to find the most popular restaurant in the area.

And they got it probably right.

But if they were going for the best restaurant, they got it most certainly wrong.

Let's break the restaurants into groups...

Places I've been and love...
  • Senate - getting knocked out by Taste of Belgium in round 2 is a crime.
  • Terry's Turf Club - A 1st-round loser? Tragedy
  • Knotty Pine on the Bayou - At least this one made it to the final four.
  • Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse - Way, way better than Embers which knocked it out.
  • Eli's BBQ - Another crime that it lost in the 1st round.
  • Bakersfield - At least it lost to Knotty Pine. I'm okay with that.
  • Taqueria Mercado - I wonder if this is the one in Fairfield (my preference) or the one downtown.

Tastes shift, and favorites come and go.

It's a fact of life.

Because of this any attempt to list my ten favorite whatevers will only result in a list of my tastes at the moment. A year down the road, things in favor could fall out, and others could take their place.

    LonnieBurger Baskets: Bobby's Burger Palace

I don't think I promised that I was ever fully retiring the LonnieBurger Basket tag, just putting it on a bit of a hiatus until something interesting showed up. We'd tried pretty much every well-regarded burger in the Cincy area, and nothing seemed to be challenging the top burgers in my rating.

Would the arrival of celebrity chef Bobby Flay in town do anything to rattle the rankings?

Flay's Bobby's Burger Palace in the new Horseshoe Casino drew The Girl and me down into Cincinnati on Reds opening day - not to the ballpark, though.

Let's see how the Flayer did...

    Burger
    • Bobby does make a tasty enough burger. They're 1/2lb burgers - a little big for my preference - but certainly generous at the price. The burgers had a little spice to them and were nicely juicy. They did lack, however, the dark, crusty bits that are the mark of a great burger to me. Burger - 7

    Toppings
    • I went with the bacon cheeseburger, lettuce, onion, and tomato. The Girl went for the Santa Fe Burger - queso sauce, pickled jalapenos, and blue corn chips. The bacon was crisp and flavorful; the onion, lettuce, and tomato were solid for being way out of summer time. The queso was slimy and tasty. The pickled jalapenos were sharp but not painful. Topping a very solid offering. Th five custom sauces on the table, though, weren't very good.  Toppings - 7

    Fries
    • The Girl and I split an order of fries. They were slightly salty and nicely crisp. They were, however, short and kinda stubby, no big, long fries in the tin. They were also served with a weirdo, flavored mayonnaise. It's supposed to be chipotle, but it's mostly just blah-flavored. Fries - 7

     Ambiance
    • The color scheme - gold, browns, rich warm tones - works nicely. The communal, serpentine tables don't work for me. The sharp lighting also not so good. And the music fights with the casino's sounds, which is a little weird. Ambiance - 6
    Cost
    • $7.75 for my burger...$3 for fries (we split, so I'll take half the cost)...$2 for Diet Coke...That's $11.25 for burger, fries, and a drink...Cost - 4
    Other Stuff
    • It's in a frickin' casino. -2
    • You have to pay for parking  at the casino.  -1
    • On our way into the parking garage - where rates were posted as being $10 per car because it was Reds Opening Day when we visited the casino - we asked the parking lot attendant if there was any on-street parking nearby because we're cheapskates. Immediately the manager leaned over and told us that we could park for free because we were welcome. Seriously, outstanding customer service is an easy way to earn points in this competition. +2
    • Seriously, we had to go to a casino and walk through the gambling floor to get to the restaurant. I'm not a big fan of casinos. -1
    • The restaurant has a full bar. +1
    • Weirdly, alcohol from the restaurant bar cannot be taken out of the restaurant and into the casino. Apparently the casino's liquor outranks the restaurant's liquor. That's weird. -1
    • I do generally like Bobby Flay when I catch him on television. Since this is a celebrity-branded restaurant, and I like the celebrity, I'm giving him a point. +1

    LonnieBurger Baskets: Zip's

The Girl and I had a free day this late summer and headed into Mount Lookout Square to try a burger at Zip's Cafe, one of dozens of places around town that claim to have the best burger in Cincinnati.

They, of course, are wrong, but let's take a look at their claim (from their FAQ page)...
"So what makes the Zip's Burger so tasty?"
It's the fresh meat delivered daily from Bleh-Avril & Sons, Inc., flamebroiled and served on toasted honey-egg buns from Klosterman Bakery, and topped with your choice of condiments... and you have before you a Cincinnati favorite since 1926... the "Zip's Burger."
...and then at just how wrong they were - by the numbers, of course.

    Burger

    • That's The Girl's burger up top and mine just below. Mine's flipped upside down, so don't worry about the lack of topping for right now. We'll get to those a little later.

The Zip's burger is supposedly fresh made and delivered daily. The burger does have a good beef flavor but lacks anything else. There seems to be no spice at all in the burger, and it could certainly use something to - ironically - give it a little zip. The beef is good and loosely packed - in the vein on a Steak 'n' Shake burger (sorry to go back to that well again and again, but it's a style most people know).

The patty was nicely tender and well cooked - though no question was asked about how either of us wanted the burger cooked, so mine ended up a little more done than I would have requested. The outside also lacked the deeper browning that I would like to see on a burger. Burger - 6

    Toppings
    • Bacon doesn't seem all that odd a request, but it's one request that Zip's couldn't fulfill. I didn't see bacon on the menu, so I told our waitress I wanted a bacon cheeseburger and asked what was the closest they could get to it. She said they could do shaved ham on a cheeseburger, and I decided to give it a go.

Shaved ham - even when they've browned it a bit on the griddle - is a poor substitute for bacon.

Pickles were fine, though The Girl actively disliked her cup of pickled (on the side). She found the spices in them were offensive.

The lettuce was shredded. The tomato was pale and watery. Toppings did not impress. Toppings - 5

    Fries

    • Nothing much to say here. The fries came our luke warm and without and seasoning...no salt (or at least not much if there was any). They were, however, made of fried potato, so at least they had that going for them. Fries - 5

    Ambiance
    • Sorry for the blur there. The camera had little enough light to work with, and with the zoom and my apparently shaky hands, this is what I get.

Zip's is a neighborhood place that the locals love to death. The rest of us, however, have to look to see if the place if worth much. On the day we were there, the Reds were on the tube - about to sweep the second-place Pirates, and the dozen folks in the bar (through those swinging doors there) were into the game. The bar is friendly enough, as is the rest of the place with lots of wood paneling and old sports equipment on the walls - not memorabilia, just sports stuff. Ambiance - 6
    Cost
    • Little tough to figure this. The menu says the burger is $4.75 plus another $0.50 for the cheese. No notice of how much ham is, though. Fries are $2.25. The Diet Coke isn't on the menu.

So let's go another way and work backwards since we didn't get an itemized receipt. The total was $25.20 for the two of us. OH food tax is 5.5% (7% on booze and soda, though), so that means our bill was probably around $23.75 before tax.

Knock out The Girl's $3.50 beer, $5.25 cheese burger, and $2.25 fries, and that leaves me on the hook for...$12.75 for burger, fries, and a soda. That's bordering on highway robbery for what we got. Cost - 2
    Other Stuff
    • The place doesn't serve bacon. -1
    • The beer was cheap. +1
    • There's a model train set constantly running around the track near the ceiling, and it travels through an updated scene of Mount Lookout Square. That's kinda cool. +2
    • The men's restroom was lit by a 15-watt bulb. It's a dark wood room, and you can't even see the door handle or latch because of how the bulb is placed and how pathetically dim it is. If the room were bigger than one toilet (the sink is though a different door even), I woulda worried about getting rolled. -2
    • Pretty much a wash there...
And the numbers say Zip's is full of burger meat...24 points...

I feel that might be a little low, but not much. Zip's doesn't have anything near the best burgers in Cincy.

    They lie.

LonnieBurger Baskets: Zola Pub & Grill

Two burgers in two days here as we went from Friday night's Trinity Pub burger to Saturday's birthday burger at Zola's Pub & Grill in Covington.

Apparently in retrospect, I might've taken a few more photographs, so I'll be heading onto the web to augment what I can provide.

Let's start with what Cincinnati Magazine has to offer up...
24 Zola Burger    ZOLA PUB & GRILL  $7.25 (as of publication almost two years ago now)
It’s meat overload, but the ham and bacon crowning this patty lend fat and flavor to the lean, somewhat dry beef, as do the mushrooms, onion, and American cheese. The toasted kaiser bun stands up to all that admirably. Try the Asian slaw—it’s like potluck ramen salad. Wednesday at Zola is Burger Mania and burgers are just $6. / 626 Main St., Covington, (859) 261-7510
We headed down into Covington and bopped up onto Main Strasse for a good burger. Let's see if I can reach way back into the memories and see what there is to say about Zola's burger.

    Burger
    • There's something to be said for a straight-up, beefy burger. Zola's isn't a plain, beefy burger. Zola's burger has a tasty bite to it, a peppery flavor that I enjoy and that I found reminiscent of the burgers at City View Tavern and the Oakley Pub & Grill. It wasn't an over-abundance of flavor drowning out the beef of the burger but rather a nice compliment to the flavor of the beef. The burger was cooked about right with just a little pink showing for my medium order, but can nobody produce a good crust on a burger? Terry's where are you? Burger - 7
    Toppings
    • I like the onion straws. They're a nice touch on a burger. These were well made and added a little crispness to the burger. The cheddar was nicely melted. The pickles were...pickley...and successfully sliced right there on the bun top with the onions and tomato slices. And they threw some mayonaise under the burger with the lettuce. Apparently the bacon got missed. We'll drop that a point or two later. The toppings that I saw on this Saturday were absolutely nothing special. Meh... Toppings - 5
    Fries
    • Fresh cut fries with the potato skins still on the edges and a little salt make for a fine accompaniment to a burger. These were...fries. Not much else to say there. They were well cooked and nicely crispy but not much more than just good fries. Fries - 7

    Atmosphere
    •  Zola's is a nice, neighborhood bar. The bar itself is a beautiful space with gorgeous pillars and attractive woodwork crowning those columns. The mirrors make the smallish bar - which also has a second story that we didn't, admittedly, wander up to - look larger, something that is, admittedly a little needed. I'm a fan of the old standard wood pub decor. Atmosphere - 7
    Cost
    • I went with the Mo Town (with barbeque sauce on the side) for $6.95 including fries...plus $2.00 for Diet Coke. That's $8.95, a point below average so...Cost - 6
    Other Stuff
    • There's the huge drawback the Zola's is forty-five minutes from my house. That's a drawback, but I can't really blame them for that.
    • There's also the fact that Zola's is in Northern Kentucky where smoking is still legal and fair game in a bar. With only a few folks in Zola's with us at the time, the place stunk of smoke. There are ashtrays on every table. Welcome to the tobacco capital of the United States. -2
Math and math and math...lemme type everything into the spreadsheet and see what gets spit out...

    Um...carry the seven...double the burger...take the square root and integral...we get 7+5+7+7+6-1 = 30 points...

    LonnieBurger Baskets: Trinity Pub

There are three 'Irish' pubs within quick driving distance from The Homestead: The Dingle House, The Brazenhead, and Trinity Pub. Or, as The Girl and I refer to them, West Chester Irish, Mason Irish, and Trailer Park Irish. Of the three, The Brazenhead is by far the most 'Irish', and the other two are at best a suburbaized Irish.

While it may, admittedly, not be very Irish, Trinity Pub (they're right next to a trailer park, and their initials are TP, see?) is a nice place to grab a bite or a drink after school - especially for those of us coming this way anyway, and the food that I've tried has all been pretty solid, so I thought I'd give their burger a try.  Let's see how they did.

    Burger
    • The Burger didn't of course, come with that big bite out of the top right portion. That was me being a little over-eager...and the blobs are just tomato bits. They look kinda like

I ordered the Trinity Burger with cheddar swapped out for Gorgonzola. That meant I got bacon, cheese, and their steak sauce (some kind of creamy A-1.)

The burger had a good, grilled flavor, like it had been cooked over a charcoal or wood grill. Tasty stuff. Not the nice crust that you can get from a direct, hot griddle, though. Convection versus conduction, doncha know... Good grill marks, good beef flavor. Burger - 7

    Toppings
    • Bacon - pretty good...cheese - sufficiently melted but not special...lettuce, tomato, onion - all pretty standard...creamy A-1 sauce - good but pretty much bottle stuff...overall, good by not great Toppings - 6

    Fries
    • Good fries...nice, hot, tasty. A little pepper on them is a nice touch. Crispy but pretty much straight from bag to fryer to plate. Fries - 6.5

    Ambiance
    • It's not Irish. Let's get that out of the way first thing. This is a British/Irish pub in very little other than a few menu items. I'm okay with that, though, because it's a fun place anyway even at standard American bar. The food is a little upscale (and priced appropriately to that), and there are a fair number of televisions on the wall tuned to ESPN or whatever ballgame happens to be on (NFL draft on the night we visited this time.) As all Ohio bars/restaurants are, it is non-smoking except for the rear porch which faces a nice, wooded area. The inside is rich with deep, dark wood but still pretty airy because of the prevalent windows. On Friday and Saturday nights, though, the place does turn into some kind of old folks (40s-50s) dance club, which is a little sad for anybody who just wants a late-night drink or burger. Ambiance - 7
    Cost
    • Burger with fries $10 + Diet Coke $2 = $12 before tip. That's a little dire for a not-too-special-just-solidly-good burger. Cost - 3
    Other stuff
    • The waitress pointed out that I could get the same burger as a build-your-own which comes with cheese and one topping (bacon). She saved me a buck. +1
    • The waitress came back and said that because of the steak sauce, she had to ring things up as the Trinity Burger which was back to the original $10. Seriously, the pour of sauce was worth a buck? -1
    • Not much else special here. Good beer selection at reasonable prices, but it's nothing that bunch of other bars don't have.
The math...+1-1+3+7+6+6.5+7 = 29.5...middle of the pack for Trailer Park Irish.

Lonnieburger Baskets: Sonny's Three Meat Burger

Three meat burgers...how can that sound anything but good?

A burger with two extra meats...and I'm gonna order it with bacon? There's nothing but positives there, but let's look at how the concept of multiple meats turns out.

    Burger
    • Let's get right to the heart of the matter by checking out the burger patty itself. It's ground beef, lamb, and chicken all stuck together which is a little freaky. Beef and pork, I'm kinda okay with because that's meatloaf, but the beef/lamb/chicken frankenburger had me a little freaked out before I took a bite.

From that first bite, I was a convert. The Girl pointed out that trying to pull off a bite of the burger is a little tougher because the patty sticks together more than a thicker beef-only patty doe. This didn't, however, result in a tough chew in the mouth. The patty did have an odd, almost a little sausagey flavor to the patty, but I don't know that there was much spice more than salt and pepper. The sausagey taste seems to be purely from the meats. It's an odd taste, but it's one that totally works.

Outside of the tri-meat composition, the burger patty is substantially similar to a Steak 'n' Shake patty - fairly thin, crispy edged, cooked through and through. I'm liking this burger patty. Burger - 8

      Toppings
    • Only a couple of cheesy options here, so I didn't get to go the cheddar with bacon route. Instead, I went American and bacon because lamb/beef/chicken just screams AMERICAN cheese, right? I threw in lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and banana peppers with the house sauce on the side. The Girl went similarly but with cheese, bacon, and not too much else. She's a straight burger kinda gal.

The cheese was rockingly melted - as American is wont to do. The lettuce was chopped, but it's the big chop that comes from actually chopping the lettuce in house rather than just dragging it out of a bag of shredded crap. The onions were nice, fresh, red ones. The tomatoes are heading toward being good summer stock. The bacon was good stuff - better than average but certainly not Applewood smoked or anything.

The house sauce was wacky. The woman taking our order said that the house sauce was mostly vegetables and spices, nothing remotely like a standard 'secret sauce' Thousand Island dressing that McDonald's and everybody else claims is their secret burger sauce. This one's kind of like a roasted red pepper humus (appropriate for a burger place with lamb in the patties) but without anything like chick peas mixed in to thicken it up. Instead, it tastes primarily of roasted red peppers and a little spice - not much, though. I didn't care for it, but The Girl liked it on her fries - not on the burger oddly.

They do offer a nice spread of toppings as you can see in that bottom photo up above a bit. Toppings - 7

     Fries
    • We'll get to the fact that the cost of fries is included with the burger cost in another couple of sections, but that is awesome. The fries are wonderfully fried, served hot and tasty in a little butcher paper sack right there next to the foil-paper-wrapped burgers. There's not much taste other than crisp, potatoey goodness. They had a tiny bit of salt - enough but could have used a little bit more. These were fairly light and good and crispy. No heavy oily feeling or taste here. Good stuff across the board. Fries - 8

     Ambiance
    • Admittedly, ambiance isn't the selling point of Sonny's. They're sort of at the end of a crappy, two-business strip mall kinda thing with the other business being a car stereo place. They're right on the busy Becchmont Ave strip of craptacular commerce, so that's not exactly a selling point. The place isn't all that big - only twenty some-odd seats, two with comfy chairs, six or so at high stools on a window counter, and lots of two- and four-tops.

This is an order at the counter kinda place, and they have a couple of behind the counter steam tables that they weren't using and that didn't appear to have been used in a while - so I don't know what those are for. They then brought the burgers out to us on a tray - a la Five Guys - wrapped up in foil paper. I was all happy with that aspect.

The decorations are a little not too thrilling with a few wall hangings and a television that makes for an absolutely nothing theme to the decorations. It's clean and plain, the people are friendly. It's all good, but it's not thrilling. Ambiance - 5

    Cost
    • Good burger...cheap prices...nothing wrong with that. The burgers come with a side - fries, chili, or soup of the day. A bacon cheeseburger with fries is $6.20 ($5.95 from the menu plus a quarter for the cheese). The single cup of Diet Coke is a bit shy of a couple of bucks. To that's cheap as can be short of going to Herb and Thelma's. Cost - 7
    Other Stuff
    • The house sauce isn't thrilling enough to earn a bonus point. It's distinctive but kinda meh...
    • The whole three meat thing (with bacon to make it four meets, of course) makes me feel impressively carnivorous. That's worth a point. +1
    • They offer Fanta and various other wacky drinks off on the side in a separate case. This lead The Girl to teach me the Scottish slang term Fanta pants, of which I was not aware. That's totally worth a point but more for The Girl than for Sonny's.
    • The Girl commented that  the unique taste of the burger wore on her by the end of the burger. The first bite drew a big compliment from her, but she was tired of the burger by the end. I didn't run into that in the least, but she didn't want to go back by the end. -1
Math, of course, must be done...1+7+5+8+7+8-1 = 35 points for Sonny's Three Meat Burger. Considering how similar to Five Guys Burgers & Fries the burger kind of was - other than the unique meat combination - that seems about right. Little cheaper but marginally better than Five Guys...fewer toppings but fries almost equally as good.

    Rankings at this point...
    • Terry's Turf Club - 45
    • Cafe de Wheels - 44
    • Senate - 43

    LonnieBurger Baskets: FlipDaddy's

First Friday of my Spring Break, and what else would I do but go searching for a cheeseburger? As most of the burgers left on the Cincinnati Magazine list are a fair drive down I-75 into the Bluegrass State, The Girl and I went searching for other sources of recommendations (what we found is tomorrow's post).

The most promising for the evening was found on BaseballAndBurgers's review of FlipDaddy's in Mason/Symmes Township. The guys over at the BaseballAndBurgers blog has FliDaddy's as the third best burger in Cincinnati (though they've only been reviewing officially for three months now, so there are a lot of places left for them to try.) That's enough of a recommendation for us to make a visit to FlipDaddy's.

    Thanks to Thadd and Milan

The Girl went with a burger with beer cheese (available as an appetizer but not officially on the toppings choices) and a pretzel bun with pickles and  lettuce. I went with the standard cheddar and bacon, onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles on my burger. We both got fries. I got a Diet Coke, and The Girl went for a beer. I'll ask her which beer it was as I can't remember.

    Burger
    • My first bite of the burger suggested a very nice, tasty, spiced patty. None of my other bites had that same flavor, so I'm guessing something dripped onto my burger on the griddle. The patty were fairly standard and regular. If they were hand formed, those hands certainly had some serious training or equipment assistance. Patties of such regularity is more of a negative than a positive.

The meat was moderately flavorful with minimal but certainly present spicing. They were a bit thin meaning that any sort of medium cooking is largely lost, and it was reasonable for the waiter not to ask for our cooking preference. Both burgers were cooked to a medium-well and without crust on the meat. The burgers themselves are fine but nothing to write home about. Burger - 6

    Toppings
    • That's some serious bacon. The menu claims that it's Applewood smoked bacon, and I fully believe. Of course,at $1.25, it'd better be. The chipotle mayo wasn't anything to write home about, though it did have a nice, little kick to it. The pickled were long cut, always a nice novelty. So far, good stuff. The onions and tomato were passable but not spectacular. The lettuce was chopped and limp, big negative.

The Girl's beer cheese was flavorful but without the horseradish kick that the best beer cheeses offer. The waiter forgot her lettuce and pickles until she asked for them a second time.

Topping is a little tough this time. Bacon - big plus...pickles - little plus...onions/tomato - neutral...lettuce - negative. I'll go slightly above medium and give them a little more because the menu offers a huge variety of toppings including a dozen different cheeses and just about every sauce possible (green chili/jalapeno compote, chimichurri, Guiness reduction, teriayaki). This isn't Terry's assortment of toppings, but it's pretty darn good. I can't give them full credit because I didn't try any of those, but it's certainly enough to get me to go back and give some of them a try. Toppings - 7

    Fries
    • These are some seriously outstanding fries. They were serves piping hot and crisp. The Girl thought them a little over salted, but I appreciated the strong flavor including a little extra garlic spice on them. There was the lightest of breadings - possibly just a quick dip into cornstarch that coated a few of the fries visibly. Great stuff. Fries - 9

    Ambiance
    • I dig the place. The restaurant had a sort of vacation home vibe with darker wood flooring, bead board half walls dividing the space, rich colors on the walls, and big, bright windows. They also offer outdoor seating that we didn't take advantage of because of threatening skies. There are televisions tunedto sports around the place - particularly around the bar, but I was okay with that on this day as Djokovic was playing, and the waitstaff was kind enough to switch that on behind The Girl. The central bar area looked friendly enough, and there was a lot of room between the tables in our seating area - enough that I wondered why they didn't nudge some closer together to fit in another table or two. They don't offer any two-person tables, something that surprised me a little bit as I saw five tables with two people occupying them while we ate, but they were happy enough to give us a four-top instead.
Admittedly, the feeling was closer to very nice, mid-price, suburban chain restaurant than to neighborhood dive bar, but at this point in my life, I'm okay with that. Ambiance - 8
    Cost
    • Ah, there's the rub, eh? The basic FlipDaddy burger in $7.99. Lots of the sauces and toppings are free, but cheese was 75 cents, and bacon another $1.49. Fries were included (for an extra buck you can swap to sweet potato fries, asparagus, or onion rings). The Girl's pretzel bun was an extra buck, as was the beer cheese on top of her $6.99 Build Your Own burger. My drink was $2.25. For my total, that was $12.49 - kind of expensive. Cost - 2.5
    Other stuff
    • FlipDaddy's has a very extensive assortment of beers, and pints are $3.50 during happy hour (until 6). +1
    • Our waiter, Eric H according to the receipt, was entertaining, thoroughly conversational when The Girl wanted to customize her burger with something not officially on the menu. +1
    • The option of outside dining was excellent and something we would likely have taken advantage of if the skies hadn't been ready to open up upon us. +1
Gimme a second while break out the abacus...1+1+1+2.5+8+6+7+9 = 35.5 That's a pretty good score for FlipDaddy's...great fries, very good assortment of toppings, decent burger patty, nicely decorated and inviting place. I like it enough to feel good about FlipDaddy's being the 8th best (of 26 we've reviewed) burger place in town.
