Bill Hader was interviewed on Fresh Air back in August and explained the origins of his comedic breaking when performing the character of Stefon. The whole interview is worth checking out, but I particularly want to point to the opening set of questions after the Terry Gross's lengthy introduction. Gross asks Hader why/how Hader breaks into laughter each time he performs his Stefon character which partially comes down to the cue card writers changing punchlines before Hader reads them on air.
The Girl and I had discussed the fact that Hader seemed to be reading some of the lines for the very first time which leaves him looking brilliantly fresh and hilarious. Turns out we were right...
