I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I did not speak out;
I was not a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
~Martin Niemoller
A number of major media outlets are NOT covering the story that Dick Cheney is angry at some media members for not staying quiet about a story that broke on June 23rd that our government has been monitoring an international banking database to check financial records (possibly yours and mine, included) in the "fight against terrorism".
Thankfully, a number of news sources have reported the story in various forms:
- USA Today's great summary
- Arizona Central's reprint of the Washington Post's story
- The Indy Fishwrap's reprint of the AP story
- the Washington Post's editorial - with great details of the program
- BBC's headline that got my attention
- NPR's story that got Karlen's attention
- ACLU's page about the Patriot Act
- US Government page about the Patriot Act
- Actual text of the Patriot Act
